The High Museum of Art is an art museum in Atlanta, Georgia. It is located on Peachtree Street in Midtown, the city’s arts district, and is a part of the Woodruff Arts Center.
Beginning history of the High Museum dates to 1905 with its initial creation as the Atlanta Art Association. In 1926, the High family, for whom the museum is named, donated their family home on Peachtree Street to house a collection after a series of exhibitions with the Grand Central Art Galleries. A separate building for the museum was built adjacent to the family home in 1955.
Currently, an all-white concrete 135,000-square-foot building stands as the present location and became permanent home of the museum in 1983 with an additional three building expansion designed by Renzo Piano. The expansion more than doubled the museum’s size to 312,000-square-feet and cost The High $124 million.
Through several elite partnerships, global endowments, and annual fundraising The High Museum has been able to grow and expand with time and is the leading art museum in the Southeastern United States.
The High Museum of Art’s permanent collection includes more than 18,000 artworks across seven collecting areas: African art, American art, decorative arts and design, European art, folk and self-taught art, modern and contemporary art, and photography.
Special exhibitions can be seen at the High and feature global partnerships with other museums such as the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. Ticket prices for general admission start at $16.50 and children under 6 years old are free. To receive exclusive discounts, special event access and benefits such as free parking membership passes may be purchased.
On July 3, 2020 The High reopened and resumed normal business hours after a brief temporary closure due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. A representative for The High said, “we’ve been fortunate enough and able to remain in fair shape and see through the pandemic because of our consistent fundraising work and global partnerships over time. The support of the public has driven all of us working at The High to continue to share and operate in the mission and purpose of The High one year later into the pandemic.”
